The European Union and The Donald Trump

Ostatnio opublikowałem w jednej z największej gazet w Indiach (!) artykuł o relacjach Unia Europejska – USA po zwycięstwie w wyborach prezydenckich Donalda Johna Trumpa. Artykuł ten, w języku angielskim, ukazał się w „New Delhi Times”.

The world changed effectively on the 8th of November this year when businessman and reality TV star became the president of the United States of America. Congratulations for Trump poured in from all over the world and the European Union too was quick to extend their congratulations. Leaders of the European Union said “We extend our sincere congratulations on your election as the 45th President of the United States of America,”

European leaders : President of the Europea Commission and President of the European Council heartily extended their congratulation and invited the new President on behalf of the EU to meet the officials as soon as possible. Tusk and Juncker in their congratulatory letter said that they valued the strategic partnership between the US and the EU and all their shared values of freedom, human rights, democracy and a belief in the world market. They also said “We should consolidate the bridges we have been building across the Atlantic. Europeans trust that America, whose democratic ideals have always been a beacon of hope around the globe, will continue to invest in its partnerships with friends and allies, to help make our citizens and the people of the world more secure and more prosperous”

In the last few years, terror took on a new and more modern turn with ISIS, who unlike al-Qaeda aimed to radicalize western youth sitting in the comforts of their homes using online propaganda alone. This has been evident in the rising terror attacks in Europe and around the world. EU, the 28-nation bloc has historically had close ties to America, and with IS looming as a threat over the western world, Europe and America need to work together now more than ever to fight. This was echoed in EU lieders letter when they said, “Today, it is more import_ant than ever to strengthen transatlantic relations. Only by cooperating closely can the EU and the US continue to make a difference when dealing with unprecedented challenges such as Da'esh (ISIS), the threats to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, climate change and migration”.

Besides peacekeeping, the EU and America have also been trade partners for many years and together the two economies contribute to 40% of the entire world’s GDP and almost a third of the world’s trade flows. EU’s letter to Trump also talked about the need for  “negotiations on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) we should spare no effort to ensure that the ties that bind us remain strong and durable.”. The TTIP is a trade agreement between the EU and America and it has been estimated that the agreement would boost the EU's economy by €120 billion, the US economy by €90 billion and the rest of the world by €100 billion. Of course in Europe this treaty arouses serious controversy and objections . We must talk about them too.

One country in the EU plays a crucial role in strengthening EU-US relations; Poland.

Warsaw has historically always maintained good ties with the US, being a part of both the EU and NATO. It is also one of the most pro-American nations, with US declaring time and again that Poland has been crucial help in times of need. Its strategic position in Eastern Europe has helped its position in the EU as a leader of foreign policy and with all the trouble in Ukraine and Russia, Poland has been playing an active role in ensuring diplomatic talks continue. These two things; its strategic location and its close bilateral ties with America make Poland an integral part of the all-new EU-US relations that will emerge with the new President.

In conclusion, EU’s letter to Trump issues an invitation saying “We would take this opportunity to invite you to visit Europe for an EU - US Summit at your earliest convenience. This conversation would allow for us to chart the course of our relations for the next four years. The European Union and America have been partners for years, right from trade, fighting terrorists to exchange of scientific ideas etc. The wellbeing of millions rest on a positive relationship between the two.
